The purpose of Intilaaqah is to stimulate and encourage young Omani job seekers to consider the option of starting their own businesses, and to provide assistance to those who wish to take up that option. The programme has been presented to the nation by Shell in the occasion of the Sultanate's 25th National Day in November 1995.

The objectives of the programme are to:

• Provide young and unemployed Omanis with the tools to develop their business ideas by offering personal counselling and referral to training in preparation for staring a business;
• Assist the Omani government’s aim of diversifying the economy away from oil and gas;
• Help alleviate the growing unemployment amongst young Omanis;
• Demonstrate Shell’s commitment to the sustainable development of the Sultanate.

Several government and private sector organisations have joined the programme as partners, and helped in sponsoring several activities.

Intilaaqah provides:

Awards
Intilaaqah organises an annual awards function to choose the best young entrepreneur in Oman.

Training
Intilaaqah provides four types of training courses to young Omanis in order to help them consider the option of starting their own business or develop an existing business.

Counselling
Advice and support is offered in a variety of ways to people who wish to pursue further the option of starting their own business, or those who wish to expand and develop their existing business.

Criteria for participation

Intilaaqah is open to:

• Omani Nationals (both – males and females)
• Aged 18-32 years
• Secondary school students (Grade 12)
• Unemployed or self-employed people (for 3-month course only)
• Those with an enthusiasm to start own business
