Leonard Tan Khang Hwee
PurpleClick Media Pte Ltd
Enabling small and medium enterprises to achieve sales through an innovative search engine marketing service is the key to success for this online marketing business.
As an employee of Yahoo, Leonard Tan’s job was to help firms improve their online presence. He was extremely good at this, but became frustrated because he wasn’t able to help his customers achieve similar success across other platforms, such as Google.
Realising that there was an exciting business opportunity to help companies improve their online marketing across the internet, Leonard secured the backing of Yahoo and gave up his five figure monthly salary to start his own business, PurpleClick in 2006.
Since then, the business has grown exponentially from a two man outfit working out of a Chinatown shophouse with a zinc roof, to a million dollar company employing 24 staff with offices in Singapore and Malaysia.
Today, PurpleClick has hundreds of clients throughout South East Asia, from SME’s to large corporations, paying for its search engine marketing services which help companies tap keywords used in online searches to direct sales leads to their own websites.
PurpleClick also provides complementary services such as Search Engine Optimisation, Online Display Advertising, Web Analytics and Email marketing, delivering results-oriented online marketing solutions that enable customers to achieve their business goals.
Despite the global economic downturn, the business achieved a turnover of $2.6 million USD in 2009, on the back of a compounded annual growth rate of 57% over the previous three years.
Leonard is already progressing ambitious plans for expansion, and is aiming to create business in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
With a host of prestigious awards under its belt, including Shell LiveWIRE and being named by Business Week as one of Asia’s Top 25 Best Young Businesses, the future is looking bright for this search engine marketing guru. Leonard even has the long term plan of taking his business public in several years time to fund further expansion which will transform if from a regional to a global brand.
