Description: A contemporary designer-maker with a passion for textiles and the simple pleasures in life.

The story behind little-friend-susan's:
During my childhood my family had very little money. Most of the things I owned had been passed down through the family; every item had a story, a past life. Worn out things were given a new life; curtains became dungarees with matching headbands; pillowcases became plimsole bags, each having a new story to tell. I remember the proud feeling of owning something that had been hand-crafted just for me, I valued the time and effort put into it, the thoughtful details. I want to pass this feeling on.

My aim is to create pieces which invokes these feelings in others. Combining the ‘make do and mend’ idea with the eco-rebellion against today’s throw away society; I intend to create a range of products that people will treasure; practical yet pretty, with a story to tell.

I take my main influences from everyday life, simple pleasures that you only notice when you slow life down: drinking tea from a cup and saucer, dippy eggs and soldiers for breakfast, cocoa and biscuits, bacon sandwiches, jugs with daffodils, wellies by the door, jumping in puddles, hot baths, sweet shops, local shops, blankets, tatty boxes, Mrs Beeton. Not just the physicality of these things but also what they represent; a slightly childish indulgence; an old fashioned way of life – a little bit Famous Five.

"And then Milly-Molly-Mandy and little-friend-Susan had a lovely time on the see-saw, chatting and eating raspberry drops, and feeling very happy and contented indeed."
from Milly-Molly-Mandy Stories by Joyce Lankester Brisley.

Good morning Jenny.
Just been reading your influences... this has set me up in a good mood for the day, particularly the drinking from a cup and saucer, egg and soldiers and boxes of tatties (presumably still covered in soil, the best way!). Love it.
Love the pics too, it's just how I'd imagined it. Will definitely be stopping by when I visit Wales.
All the best Maria
