Welcome to Shell LiveWIRE International / Brazil celebrates its LiveWIREs

Shell Iniciativa Jovem Award 2012

On 8th November, Iniciativa Jovem, the Brazilian version of Shell LiveWIRE, held their annual Business Fair and Entrepreneur Award. The event aims to bring together established entrepreneurs with those debuting a new business created or consolidated in the 2012 class of the  Iniciativa Jovem programme.

23 innovative business ideas were presented to fellow entrepreneurs and event delegates, explaining the unique selling points in a very interactive format, on the floor of the exhibition area.

This 11th edition of the Business Fair addressed the theme “The Global Entrepreneur” inspired by the Shell LiveWIRE 30 year anniversary being celebrated in 2012. The event space was decorated in referrence to the international theme of Shell LiveWIRE, showing how the modern world is so interconnected. Pictures of award winners from countries where a LiveWIRE programme exists were hanged throughout the exhibition area, generating more than curiosity by the public but also a sense of closeness and of a shared mission between the programmes.

Sally Buberman, co-founder and director of Wormhole I.T, was invited as the special guest to represent “Desafio Joven”, the Argentinian version of LiveWIRE. Sally, along with Jefferson Reisinger, a member of IBM Brazil, participated in a discussion and Q&A session about the challenges of dealing with a globalized chain of products, workers and consumers. The conversation was mediated by Alessandro Mendes, founder of INTARGET Consultoria and former member of Iniciativa Jovem, with the topic “Innovate and Integrate - Entrepreneurship without borders”.

Nevertheless, anticipation was building for the Entrepreneur Awards ceremony, to follow at the end of the Business Fair, when eight young entrepreneurs would be in contention to win a cash prize to support the launch of their start-ups. The businesses were judged by six industry professionals.

  • 1st place and Shell Iniciativa Jovem Entrepreneur of the Year is: Adriana Nagaia with “A Basi”, a factory that produces flour for making homemade breads from must discarded in the beer manufacturing process
  • 2nd place: Plínio Calmeto with “Radar da Produção”, a virtual platform to search for service providers in the area of the production of cultural events
  • 3rd place: Luana Landrini with “Lola Manola Acessórios” which offers the possibility of customising jewellery, creating unique pieces.

Adriana said on winning the award: "I looked at the [Iniciativa Jovem] programme because I felt the need to validate my business idea. I had been trying and preparing myself but the market wasn’t ready for my idea yet. Now with the support I found, I can finally start my business. Iniciativa Jovem opened many doors to me. This prize means that I’ve been on the right track and that’s the route I’ll stay on”.

The night marked the beginning of a new phase for these young entrepreneurs as they start the final stage of the programme called 'Business Factory'. With a structured business plan in place, the young entrepreneur will have technical support that includes: consultancy, mentoring and periodical follow-up. At the end of the Factory, which lasts around 6 months, the entrepreneurs will be able to submit their business to the Shell Iniciativa Jovem’s Seal of Sustainable Entrepreneurship.
