Abia Imo DavidAbia International Company
Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Starting a business to help fund his university education provided the initial impetus for Abia Imo’s highly successful creative media company.

Having graduated with a degree in Applied Chemistry, Abia decided to focus full time on the business, which had helped to fund his education, and take it to the next level.

Abia received invaluable advice and support from the Shell LiveWIRE programme on how to develop his business and won a cash award which was used to purchase the latest IT and video editing equipment. This LiveWIRE award enabled the business to make the crucial transition from analogue to digital production, and the company has continued to make significant progress.

Today, Abia has 15 full time employees, more than 10 casual staff, and achieves a turnover in excess of US $184,000. The company’s services range from digital photography and cinematography to post production and event management, and Abia works with a growing array of individual and corporate clients, including providing media services to Shell.

With a growing reputation both regionally and nationally, Abia has been commissioned to deliver photography and cinematography training to over 200 young people. Additionally, as part of his own corporate social responsibility programme, Abia has enabled three young people to start photographic enterprises to finance their education by providing them with digital cameras. He is also a volunteer mentor for the LiveWIRE programme, guiding and nurturing the next generation of business leaders.

In recognition of his entrepreneurial success, and for creating significant employment opportunities, Abia has received prestigious business awards from Citibank (Growing Business Foundation Award) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (Entrepreneurship Award – Employment Generation).

Looking to the future, Abia hopes to develop the business into a one-stop-shop where customers can have their pictures taken, edited, canvassed, framed and delivered within 30 minutes. Ultimately, he aims to run his own television company.
