Joy Edojah Money
Cherish Optical Centre
Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria

Like many other successful entrepreneurs, Joy was frustrated by a lack of suitable products and services and decided to fill the gap in the market herself.

Following an eye test, Joy was disappointed to learn that the clinic wasn’t able to provide her with the glasses she needed, and that she would have to return in two weeks. Not satisfied with this outcome, Joy decided to see if there were other opticians in the area and quickly discovered that there weren’t.

Having graduated with a degree in Optometry, Joy saw that the time was right to fill this gap in the market and started her own optical practice, Cherish Optical Centre, in 2006.

Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria helped her with all aspects of planning and managing her business, and Joy says that the programme also enabled her to introduce new ideas to develop the business and to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Today, Cherish Optical Centre has grown to employ eight staff and achieves a turnover of around US $20,000. Joy provides the community with a full range of quality eye care services ranging from visual screening to the latest designer spectacles, and she also goes out into the community to offer eye tests in schools, clinics and community centres.

Joy’s growing reputation as a leading provider of quality eye care has enabled Cherish Optical Centre to provide its services to Shell’s community and youth development programmes. So far, this collaboration has enabled over 4,000 people to receive professional eye care services.

Cherish Optical Centre believes strongly in its social responsibility and Joy provides free glasses to school children, widows and the elderly, and to date over 200 people have benefited from this.

In the future, Joy plans to expand the business beyond Delta State, and then diversify into purchasing and supplying quality optical tools and equipment.
