Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria

Having graduated in Petroleum Engineering and then discovering that a career in the Oil & Gas industry was not for him, Emmanuel decided to turn his passion for painting into a thriving business, with the help of Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria.

Joining the Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria programme in 2005 enabled Emmanuel to develop his entrepreneurial skills and to research and produce a viable business plan. Through the programme, Emmanuel also received the funding he needed to kick start his business, along with a mentor to act as a sounding board as the business took off.

Emmanuel launched his business Excel Creations Enterprise in 2005 to provide a range of services including painting, decorating, printing and graphic design. Emmanuel quickly established a reputation for domestic and commercial painting services and for his expertise in paint mixing to create striking colour ranges.

Since its launch, Excel Creations has grown from a one man enterprise to employ 18 staff and turning over N185,000,000 (US $930k). Emmanuel’s professionalism ensures that word of mouth referrals have contributed to his growing list of clients ranging from domestic householders to national and multi-national corporate customers, including the Nigerian conglomerate, Transcorp. Excel Creations has also worked in Ghana, and Emmanuel has won a string of prestigious paint industry accolades including awards from Dulux and Crown Paints.

Highlighting the importance of satisfied customer recommendations in generating new business, along with his eye for a business opportunity, Emmanuel says, “One day a manager walked into a restaurant and asked for the person who painted it. He was given my phone number and I was invited to their office for a job interview. I asked how much I would get paid. I rejected their offer and only agreed to buy their paints on a commission basis. The following week the agreement was signed and for every tin of paint I buy I get a commission.”

Explaining the role Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria has played in his success to date, Emmanuel said, “Shell LiveWIRE provided every award beneficiary with a mentor to follow up with, so whenever we had a problem, we could go to them. They gave us so much assistance. Shell LiveWIRE has made me what I am today.”

Emmanuel has ambitious growth plans for his company, including developing a multi-national paint manufacturing franchise, employing over 10,000 staff and achieving an annual turnover in excess of N500,000,000 (US $2.7m).
