Shamoon Sultan of Khaadi

Shamoon Sultan
Karachi, Pakistan

Reviving the dying craft of traditional hand-woven fabrics by giving it a contemporary make-over and creating a leading designer brand, is the passion that’s driven livewire fashion entrepreneur Shamoon Sultan.

As a textile design graduate, specialising in weaving, Shamoon spotted a significant gap in the market to create highly fashionable clothing and home textiles from hand-woven fabrics.

Launched in 1998, Khaadi started as a small venture with only a handful of weavers. Today, the business has grown ten-fold with its own factory employing a team of highly skilled weavers and artisans producing a wide range of colourful, haute couture clothing, fashion accessories and soft furnishings. The business has opened 14 exclusive Khaadi stores in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Sialkot, has become a well-known designer brand, and is one of the most successful textile houses in Pakistan.

Employing 200 staff and with a turnover in excess of USD $ 8.2 Million (approximately PKR 700 million rupees), Khaadi has won several prestigious design awards, and is developing an ever increasing international following.

In the future, Shamoon hopes to expand the business internationally and ultimately hopes to become a global brand.

Shamoon says that when he started the business he expected it to fail within the first six months, and envisaged having to beg his father to give him a job. However, just over ten years later, he’s single-handedly saved the handloom from extinction and has shown that world class high fashion design is thriving in Pakistan.
