Ivan Kurniawan
Lazuli Sarae
Bandung, West Java, Indonesia

Combining traditional Indonesian textiles with western denim fabrics is the key to success for this emerging fashion brand.

As an IT graduate, Ivan always harboured a desire to start his own business whilst at University, and he considered several business ideas ranging from computer gaming to events management, before settling for fashion.

Ivan’s inspiration came from a University friend who was doing his final year project on an ‘East meets West’ theme, and the idea of creating a new textile by combining Batik and Denim was born. Batik is the traditional method of manual wax-resist dyeing fabrics, and Ivan saw a way to apply this technique on denim, using computer technology, to create a unique range of modern fashions.

Since the launch of Lazuli Sarae in 2011, the business has grown to produce over 1,000 pieces a month including shirts, dresses, jackets, trousers, shorts, bags, necklaces and bracelets, for a growing young fashion conscious clientele. Today, the business employs 8 staff, and achieves a turnover of US $50,000.

Lazuli Sarae has quickly become a well known and respected fashion brand, with most of Indonesia’s leading online fashion retailers (Zalora, Hijup and Rakuten) stocking its product range. The brand is also promoted at Jakarta Fashion Week and is available at Indonesia’s largest shopping mall.

Ivan’s plans for the future include opening his own flagship store, developing overseas markets, and ultimately becoming a world class mid-high end fashion label.
