Revision, or the lack of it, will always be a source of anxiety for school pupils across the world. In November 2011, 25 year old entrepreneur Jermaine Hagan launched Revision App, a mobile and tablet application to assist in exam revision and general education. It has fast become one of Apple’s most downloaded education applications, accessed by 1.2 million students across four territories.

With a degree in Financial Computing from Brunel University, Jermaine taught himself how to code in order to create the first version of his app, having left a secure job in IT to follow his business dream. Importantly for students, the app is affordable, especially when compared to the price of traditional paperback revision guides. Free for core subjects like Maths and Science, additional subjects like Business Studies and Psychology range from as little as £0.69 (US $1).

In 2013, Revision App secured a £1,000 (US $1,500) grant from the Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Award fund, a helping hand at a time when the business was experiencing rapid growth at a local level. Jermaine went on to win Shell LiveWIRE’s top prize, the title of ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’, beating 700 other young entrepreneurs. The £10,000 (US $15,100) funding this award carries allowed Jermaine to accelerate his expansion plans into Europe and the Middle East, with North America set to follow.

Perhaps more valuable than cash funding, Jermaine has recently benefitted from business advice from a Shell Business Development Executive. The sessions have helped him identify and address business growth issues caused by Revision App’s original pricing system, reformulating the model so that it meets both customer needs and revenue potential.

Revision App has the potential to make some serious money, but Jermaine is adamant that the business is as much a social enterprise as it is a corporate venture. Providing an accessible, cost effective study aid is helping students all over the world learn better, and for Jermaine it’s that thought that has driven his rapid success.

Passionate that they can expand the app’s reach to 3 million people by the end of 2015, the sky is the limit for Revision App and its users.
