Shell Iniciativa Jovem, the LiveWIRE programme in Brazil, has held a special entrepreneurial development weekend to select the 80 candidates who will benefit from the programme’s start-up support services during 2017.

During the three-day event, 180 budding young entrepreneurs undertook an intensive series of entrepreneurial, personal and management development activities to test their problem-solving abilities, creative drive and business acumen to the full.

Over 1,200 young people aged between 20-34 years old applied for the selection weekend, from which 400 were invited to attend a personal interview, resulting in 180 going forward to the weekend from 17-19 March at the NAU – Núcleo de Ativação Urbana (Urban Activation Centre) – an impressive coworking space in Rio de Janeiro.

The 180 candidates came with a diverse array of business ideas, ranging from fashion and food to renewable energy and nanotechnology.

The weekend started with a day of inspiring talks from some of Shell Iniciativa Jovem’s alumni, who gave the participants a unique insight into their experiences as successful entrepreneurs.

Day two challenged the candidates to work in groups to design enterprising solutions to some of Brazil’s most pressing socio-economic issues. Key speakers, including: Glauco Paiva, External Relations Manager, Shell Brasil; Alexandre Kalache, International Longevity Centre, Brazil (ILC-BR); and, Luan Santos, Brazilian Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), led sessions on the energy future, population ageing, and urban mobility, and candidates were assessed on their ability to contribute imaginative, plausible solutions to the group dynamic.

The final day provided each participant with the opportunity to secure one of 80 places on the prestigious 2017 Shell Iniciativa Jovem programme by pitching their business idea to a panel of business experts.

The 80 successful budding entrepreneurs will now benefit from a year long programme which will enable them to benefit from a series of enterprise development training workshops, mentoring, coaching and networking activities which will enable each participant to design and validate their business model, and to ensure that their business is economically and environmentally sustainable.

One of the young entrepreneurs to benefit from the Shell Iniciativa Jovem selection weekend is João Vitor Alencar of EcoSabor. After having to pull out of the 2016 programme for personal reasons, João was very happy to be given the chance to be considered for the 2017 intake, saying, “I decided to apply again this year because the format is very inspiring and exciting. The training process helps us to turn our ideas into reality, and I like the new model for selection. It is amazing to experience the buzz generated by 180 energetic young minds, and the opportunity to network with them was really cool.”

Emmanuelle Rodrigues, who came to Shell Iniciativa Jovem to develop her fashion design business, TripNeed, was inspired by the event, saying, “This is the first time I have participated in an event like this, and the exchange of ideas and experiences was incredible!

“Learning about other people’s business ideas has been amazing, and it’s enabled me to fine tune my thoughts.

“The event was so stimulating, and in such contrast to the bad scenario we face in our country today, where hopelessness reigns and it makes you despair. Here, you meet dynamic people who want to make a difference, and this gives me the energy to aspire higher!”

Commenting on the success of the selection weekend, Leíse Duarte, Social Performance Manager, Shell Brasil, said, “This year, Shell Iniciativa Jovem innovated and went beyond a mere selection process. We brought together a group of dynamic young people, full of bright ideas, to think about the fundamental issues for our future.

“They heard inspirational stories from our alumni, we challenged them to come up with enterprising solutions to some of our most pressing socio-economic problems, and they pitched their businesses to leading experts.

“Shell Iniciativa Jovem is making use of modern tools used in the entrepreneurial environment to attract and select businesses that will maximise the learning opportunity. This selection process will identify those with the potential to impact the future in a positive and sustainable way.”
