A new study has revealed that 62% of business owners feel that being their own boss is more satisfying than they had expected.

Millennials were the most surprised at the level of satisfaction self-employment brought, with 81% reporting it was a better experience than they had hoped it would be. Only 5% of survey participants reported it was less satisfying than they had anticipated.

Expectations vs. reality: what’s it really like to go it alone?, produced by Vistaprint, also revealed there was a significant gap between the number of non-self-employed individuals who wanted to start a business, 62%, with those who considered starting a business as a realistic goal, 14%.

Among business owners taking part in the survey, lifestyle benefits provided the most significant motivation for starting-up, more so than financial drivers. The ability to be in charge of your own destiny was the most popular reason for starting a business, cited by 66%, followed by the ability to work flexibly, 55%. Financial independence was cited by 44% of participants as the reason they started their venture.

The results also revealed there were few gender differences, with the exception of female business owners being more likely to be motivated to start a business for work/life balance, 47% to 31%.

Business owners shared their views that the most important attribute for an entrepreneur was being hardworking, reported by 80%, self-confident, 65%, intelligent, 65%, and having a warm and friendly personality, 59%. Ruthlessness was cited by only 6% of business owners as a valuable quality for an entrepreneur to possess.
