Desafio Joven rewards its young entrepreneurs

Desafío Joven, the Shell LiveWIRE programme in Argentina, has presented awards to three of its most oustanding young entrepreneurs at a special event at the Universidad Católica in Buenos Aires.

The event was attended by representatives from Shell, ACDE (the programme’s delivery partner) and guests from various educational and governmental institutions that support the development of young entrepreneurs in Argentina.

The 13th ‘Young Challenge’ Awards began by showcasing 40 businesses that started up with the support of Desafío Joven, before focusing on the 10 finalist businesses. Desafío Joven provided enterprise training for some 368 young people, of which 178 went on to receive business advice from volunteer consultants and attend MasterClasses by enterprise experts. As a result, 50 business plans were developed and these were evaluated by an expert juding panel, with the ten best proposals shortlisted for the final.

The judging panel included: Ruben Arena, Director, Shell Argentina; Juan Pablo Simon Padros, Director of ACDE; Alexandre Boccara of the Buenos Aires City Government; Matias Ponz Lezica of Banco Galicia; and former Desafío Joven participants, Sebastian Cadenas and Elviera Museri.

Following speeches by Shell Director Ruben Arena and Juan Pablo Simon Padros, Director of ACDE, the awards were presented:

The top award of ARS $30k (US $3,400) went to 26-year-old Matías Opazo for his business ‘Project Green Urban’, which designs, installs and maintains green terraces in urban communities.

Maximiliano Viglianco (28) received the ARS $25k (US $2,800) runner up prize for his business ‘Project ISoporte’ which delivers IT solutions for the home maintenance sector.

Third place, and ARS $20k (US $2,300), went to Guadalupe Falasca (27) for her Enterprise ‘Dream Wake Up!’ which creates hand-made shoes and provides employment opportunities for the elderly and people living with disabilities.

During 2014, the average age of the young people assisted by Desafío Joven was 27, and 63% of the programme’s participants were male.
