Latest News / UK world leader in business innovation

The 2016 Global Innovation Index, released this month, has revealed the UK is a world leader in business innovation. The UK came third in the latest rankings, with the Netherlands making the top ten, in 9th place.

Areas of strength in supporting an innovative business environment demonstrated by the UK included infrastructure, in which it scored particularly highly for access and participation in IT and online. Local competitiveness and online creativity, which includes measuring online cultural contributions such as the volume of Wikipedia edits and YouTube uploads, also helped secure its high ranking.

The Netherlands gained its highest innovation score in the ‘Creative Outputs’ category, scoring particularly well for its online creativity and ranking highest in the world for online participation. In addition, it came 2nd in the world for supporting businesses to be innovative via a strong logistics infrastructure.

The report highlights the role of innovation in the creation of socio-economic value, commenting, “Innovation is now widely recognised as a central driver of economic growth and development.

“As the quest for innovative solutions expands, the likelihood of technological breakthroughs or affordable innovations - in areas as varied as health and the environment - increases.”
