Latest News / LiveWIRE countries lead women entrepreneurship index

Shell LiveWIRE countries, South Africa and Brazil, have both been featured highly in the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs 2017 Report, released to coincide with last week’s International Women’s Day.

South Africa ranked third best in the world in the Knowledge Assets and Financial Access category, which measured the extent to which women entrepreneurs in each country were marginalised academically, and by financial institutions as commercial customers. Brazil was ranked sixth best in the world in the Women’s Advancement Outcomes category, which measured the extent to which women were marginalised as business leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs and labour force participants.

A key global finding of the report revealed that areas with favourable conditions for entrepreneurship, such as access to support and high quality governance, were driving the progress of women business ownership faster than their counterparts, irrespective of how advanced their economy was.

Commenting on the report, Martina Hund-Mejean, Chief Financial Officer at Mastercard, said, “The prevalence of ambitious, resourceful women should be regarded as a prime business opportunity.”
