Latest News / Brazilian LiveWIREs receive Sustainable Development Seal

76 new enterprises assisted by Shell LiveWIRE in Brazil have been awarded the programmes’ prestigious ‘Sustainable Development Seal’, acknowledging that they are economically and environmentally sustainable.

The businesses, which completed the programmes’ enterprise training modules during 2016, received their ‘Seal’ awards at special presentations in Rio de Janeiro, Macaé and Vila Velha in January. By receiving the ‘Seal’ certification, each of the entrepreneurs has demonstrated that they have an economically viable business model, and that their companies are environmentally and socially responsible.

Of the 76 start-ups to receive the ‘Seal’, 34 were supported by Shell Iniciativa Jovem, the Shell LiveWIRE programme operating in Rio de Janeiro, while 42 benefited from its sister programme, Shell Iniciativa Empreendedora, which encourages and supports entrepreneurs of any age to develop sustainable business opportunities in the oil and gas industry in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states, where the industry – including Shell – is most active.

In order to achieve the ‘Sustainable Development Seal’, the entrepreneurs had to successfully complete the programmes’ 12 month enterprise development training modules. These included small business workshops, coaching and mentoring sessions to enable the participants to research their business and produce a viable business model. Also, a business fair organised by the programmes, enabled participants to perfect their pitching and presentation skills, which is vital in developing market opportunities and in securing investment.

The entrepreneurs had to demonstrate that they have built sustainable principles into their business models, including: respect for the environment; socially responsible practises; and, ethical business operations. Each of the entrepreneurs presented their business model to a panel of sustainability experts, who had the final say in who receives the ‘Seal’.

The ‘Seal’ is an important accolade for the businesses, as it’s recognised by local markets and makes it easier for new businesses to enter the market and build strong partnerships.

The 76 start-ups, which cover a wide range of business sectors ranging from fashion and sports to education and food, will now join the programmes’ Sustainable Enterprise Network which comprises 236 alumni. Membership of the network represents a huge opportunity for the new entrepreneurs to benefit from the knowledge, expertise and contacts of the existing alumni, as they seek to establish themselves in the marketplace. As new members of the network, they will be audited each year to enable them to develop their businesses in line with best practice.

One of the entrepreneurs supported by the programme is Guilherme Sucupira whose business, Mão Santa, specialises in quality repair and maintenance services. Commenting on the programme’s impact on his business, Guilherme said, “Shell Iniciativa Jovem played a major role in the development of my business. During the year-long programme I was able to familiarise myself with new methodologies to support and structure business information in the context of entrepreneurship.

“The programme had a huge impact on the improvement of the business. After such a rewarding and challenging experience, I believe that I am better prepared to move forward with this dream.

“My aim is to grow the business, and being part of the Seal of Sustainable Business Network will be vitally important in helping me to achieve my ambitions.”

Another entrepreneur Tiago Medeiros Machado, whose business, Falcon Soluções Industriais, provides engineering solutions for the oil & gas sector, is also thankful for the support he received from Shell Iniciativa Empreendedora, saying, “The programme has enabled me to develop my potential and make a dream, that seemed distant, become true.”

Juliana Soares de Morais of sustainable fashion accessories brand, Ecool, said, “To be part of Shell Iniciativa Jovem was a transformative experience that made me grow both personally and professionally. When I joined the programme, my business was very small, but within a few months I had made so much progress. I met some great people, and even developed business partnerships. Thanks to Shell for giving me the opportunity to learn, grow and bloom.”

Thais Oliveira, Programme Manager, Shell Iniciativa Empreendedora, said, “This year represents a remarkable accomplishment with 76 businesses receiving the Seal of Sustainable Enterprise. Now they are part of Shell LiveWIRE Brazil’s Sustainable Entrepreneurship Network, which is a great indication that the programme is nurturing high impact entrepreneurs.

“These entrepreneurs are committed to changing the environment in which they operate, generating incomes and employment, as well as inspiring new generations of innovative entrepreneurs.”
