Shell LiveWIRE Brunei’s recent SME Promotion event attracted a record number of participating enterprises. The event, which showcases some of the country’s most outstanding young entrepreneurial talent, was held from the 21st to 23rd of June, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

106 enterprises participated in this year’s event at the National Stadium in the heart of Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, representing a considerable increase on the 15 businesses which took part in the inaugural event in 2006.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and guest-of-honor, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid said, ‘Recent entrepreneurship trends have seen youths steadily gaining larger shares of the business market.’

Included among the enterprises that took part in the SME Promotion were several school-based enterprises which have taken part in the Brunei Entrepreneurship Education Scheme (BEES); a collaboration between Brunei Shell Petroleum, the Ministry of Education and the University of Brunei Darussalam, to ensure that enterprise is delivered within the schools’ national curriculum. One of the BEES’ enterprises, Al-Hijrah Tour Services, provides water tours and island trips around Brunei, and is an active proponent of the country’s fledgling tourism industry. The student-run company from Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School, Al-Hijrah won ‘The Most Outstanding Company 2012 from the Ministry of Education and Shell LiveWIRE Brunei.

Another BEES supported enterprise, Mystic Blue Company, which provides party planning services said that the SME Promotion had enabled them to promote their services to the wider public, and to hone their marketing and customer service skills.

Other activities during the Shell LiveWIRE Brunei SMEs Promotion included an SMEs Fun Run, which saw the participation of His Majesty’s children, abseiling activities, “Rumah Pusaka” (showcasing Brunei folk tales) and a Discussion Forum session with the Malaysian journalist-cum-entrepreneur, June Saira Ramli.

Commenting on the SME Promotion event, Pg Redzuan Pg Hj Abbas, Programme Director of Shell LiveWIRE Brunei said, “This is the biggest and best SME Promotion event to date and it’s enabled us to show off some of the outstanding young businesses that Shell LiveWIRE Brunei is helping to nurture. It’s also a fantastic way to inspire more young people to consider starting their own business and to further enhance the programme’s reputation with key stakeholders.”

Drawing in crowds from all over the nation, the SME Promotion is just one of many entrepreneurial initiatives that Shell LiveWIRE Brunei runs in partnership with both like-minded governmental and non-governmental agencies. Another similar project is the recently concluded Shell LiveWIRE Brunei Ramadan Booth Stall, where the sales of participating enterprises from the LiveWIRE Brunei Business Network were donated to the charity organisation for young orphans in the sultanate, the ‘Sultan’s Yayasan Orphan Fund.’ This donation symbolises Shell LiveWIRE Brunei’s commitment to the country’s community development.
